Frequently Asked Questions AboutOxygen Equipment |
FAQ #1
What is the
difference between a resuscitator and an inhalator? A
resuscitator is used to resuscitate the non-breathing patient, the
inhalator is used to give 100% oxygen to the breathing patient in
distress. |

FAQ #2
What is the difference between medical grade oxygen and breathing air? Medical grade oxygen is 100% (actually around 99.5%) oxygen. Breathing air (and ambient air) is 21% oxygen |

FAQ #3
Can I give someone too much oxygen? It has been very difficult in finding a case in which this occurred. This would be very rare in an emergency situation when the body is deprived of oxygen. |
FAQ #4

Can I damage someone’s lungs with a demand valve? No, demand valves have a safety relief feature, which causes them to stop building pressure at a safe level. |
FAQ #5
If I try to resuscitate someone and fail, can I be sued? To the best of my knowledge, most states have a Good Samaritan law that protects anyone who, in good faith, tries to help someone in distress. |
FAQ #6
When does an oxygen cylinder have to be hydrostatically tested? Aluminum cylinders have to be tested after 5 years. Steel cylinders after 10 years. They do not have to be tested until they are to be refilled. |
FAQ #7
Does oxygen have an expiration date? Yes, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) arbitrarily chose 5 years, but the Compressed Gas Association is fighting this rule (100% oxygen does not break down) so it is currently suspended. |
